About Hospital

Cumilla Medical College Hospital (COMCH), also spelled Comilla Medical College Hospital, is a government medical college hospital located at Kuchaitoli, on Dr Akhtar Hameed Khan Road, in Cumilla Sadar, Cumilla district. It serves as the only tertiary-level (Level 3) referral hospital for the greater Cumilla region, covering an area of about 3,085 square kilometers and serving a population of roughly 60 million across the Greater Comilla and Noakhali region.

The foundation stone of the institution was laid in November 1979, with the government acquiring 15 acres of land near the MATS (Medical Assistant Training School) building to establish a medical college and hospital. In the 1981-82 academic year, 50 students were admitted to the first MBBS batch. However, the government later decided to stop academic activities and instead set up a 250-bed hospital at the site; classes were suspended in 1982 and students were transferred to other government medical colleges.

Following continuous demand from local people, medical associations, and political leaders, Cumilla Medical College restarted its education activities in 1992, based on the existing MATS infrastructure, and the hospital reopened in January 1992 as a 250-bed modernized hospital. It was later renamed Cumilla Medical College Hospital, with MATS facilities and manpower merged into the Medical College. Full-fledged infrastructure development was completed and handed over in July 2008, and the hospital was upgraded to its current capacity of 500 beds in 2009.

The exact day of the January 1992 reopening could not be confirmed from available sources - please verify.
