Most hospital names in Bangladesh honor politicians or presidents. This one honors a doctor who refused to abandon his patients, and paid for it with his life.
Dr. Shamsuddin Ahmed was a surgeon at what was then Sylhet Medical College Hospital. When the Liberation War broke out in 1971, he stayed at his post rather than fleeing, treating wounded freedom fighters as the fighting reached the city itself. On 9 April 1971, after freedom fighters attacked a Pakistani army convoy near the hospital, Pakistani troops cordoned off the building in retaliation. They killed Dr. Shamsuddin along with a colleague, Dr. Shyamol Kanti Lala, a nurse, an ambulance driver, and five others who were present. They were buried beside the hospital, a site later declared Sylhet's Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard. After independence, this hospital was built on that same ground and named in his honor, while the medical college hospital itself relocated to the Kajalshah area (now MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital).
Setting the martyrdom story aside, the hospital's operational history has been considerably messier. It began functioning as Sylhet Sadar Hospital, the district's general hospital, in 1992, and was renamed after Dr. Shamsuddin in 1998. In 2012, the health minister visited and announced plans to convert it into a dedicated mother-and-child hospital, citing Sylhet's higher-than-average maternal and child mortality rates. That plan evolved further: on 16 September 2014, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone to renovate and expand it into a specialized 100-bed children's hospital, with Tk10 crore allocated. The Public Works Department spent only Tk3 crore before the remaining Tk7 crore was returned, leaving the renovation incomplete. The Prime Minister nonetheless announced the hospital's start during an inauguration event - reported as 21 January 2015 by one source and 21 January 2016 by another, so we cannot confirm the exact year with certainty, please verify.
Whichever year it was, the pattern since has been familiar: as of reporting from October 2021, the specialized children's hospital had still not begun operating, blamed on a lack of administrative approval and a shortage of staff, compounded by poor coordination between the Public Works Department and the Health Engineering Department. Then, when COVID-19 hit in March 2020, the facility was repurposed as a dedicated coronavirus treatment center, further delaying whatever children's hospital plan remained on paper. We found more recent social media activity, including a hospital Facebook post from around early 2026 referencing newly admitted patients, suggesting some level of general patient care continues at the site even now - but we could not confirm whether the specialized children's hospital transformation has ever actually been completed.
